Queen Mattress Size Guide Dimensions

You have reached the right place if you are looking to know more about mattress sizes.

Mattresses are commonly available in four different sizes - King, Queen, Double, Twin and this part focuses on providing in depth information on Queen size mattress.

Queen mattress size is the most common bedding size in the industry, so much so that, it is sometimes referred to as a standard size mattress.

Until mid of 1940’s, North Americans used to sleep on smaller bed sizes like twin and double. In some countries, these are still called as single bed (for 1 person) and double bed (for 2 people). At that time, if some consumer needed a bigger bed, they would buy a pair of twin mattress and use that as a bigger bed mattress. However, that would mean much higher price for a bigger size mattress than a twin or double mattress.

Around the middle of 1940’s and towards the beginning of 1950’s, bed and mattress manufacturers began to introduce larger mattresses which were later called and standardized as “queen” and “king” size.

Factors to consider for mattress size
Body size

A Queen size mattress is best suited for an adult couple, especially if one of the adults is near 6 feet in height. If you are a couple considering a queen size mattress, you will want to make sure no one is taller than 6 feet.

Family Size

Queen size mattress is best considered to be fit for two people or a single person with a pet or a baby. If you family size is increasing to more than this, then you should consider a bigger size or a separate bed.

Room size

Architects and designers recommend considering room size as an important factor in deciding the mattress size. The golden rule of thumb is a ratio of 3:1 which means that your room should be 3 times the size of the mattress area.

A standard queen mattress takes 35 square feet of space. So, if the size of the room is 100 square feet or more, the queen size mattress should be a good size. Many older homes (especially war time homes) were not designed to fit a queen size mattress, so you will want to measure your room to make sure a queen mattress will fit in your bedroom.

House Size

When considering the size of mattress to buy, consider the space available in the house to move the mattress from outside of house to the inside destination room/area.

Another thing to consider is whether the queen mattress will be able to go through your house leading up to your bedroom as you move it in. Often the queen mattress will flex and fit, however the box-spring is rigid and inflexible. You may end up needing a queen split box-spring.
