King Mattress Size Guide Dimensions

If you have not bought any bed or mattress before or have very limited experience in different mattress sizes, then you are at the right place.

Mattresses are commonly available in four different sizes - King, Queen, Double, Twin and this part focuses on providing in depth information on King size mattress.

King size was not very common until the last couple of decades. As the society became more prosperous and the economy went up, the size of the houses and the rooms became bigger. With the availability of more spacious rooms, people started to shop for bigger beds and mattress and hence, the requirement for King size mattress increased.

Until mid of 1940’s, North Americans used to sleep on smaller bed sizes like twin and double. If some consumer needed a bigger bed, they would buy a pair of twin mattress and use that as a bigger bed mattress. Around the middle of 1940’s and towards the beginning of 1950’s, bed and mattress manufacturers began to introduce larger mattresses which were later called and standardized as “King” and “Queen” size.

Dimensions
King Standard
A standard king is the most common variant of the king mattress and accounts for almost 90% of all king size mattress sale.

King mattress: 6.33 feet x 6.67 feet

King mattress: 76 inches x 80 inches

King mattress: 193.00 cm X 203.20 cm

California King
A California king mattress is about 4 inches shorter in width but around 4 inches more in length. Shortly after World War II, a Los Angeles mattress merchant decided that Californians had big enough houses and big enough lifestyles to warrant Big Beds. So, he built a bed six feet wide by seven feet long, or 72 inches by 84 inches. And he called it the California King.

Cal King mattress: 6.00 feet x 7.00 feet (per piece)

Cal King mattress: 72 inches x 84 inches (per piece)

Cal King mattress: 182.88 cm X 213.36 cm (per piece)

King Split
Split King Mattresses are not as rare as a split variation of other mattress available sizes. A standard king size mattress becomes bulky and heavy which sometimes makes it difficult to move. Splitting a King mattress reduces both the size and weight of the mattress to half. Although this will mean that consumer will need to handle two pieces instead of one piece, but, for a lot of consumers, it is better option than a single piece of king mattress.

King split mattress: 3.16 feet x 6.67 feet (per piece)

King split mattress: 38 inches x 80 inches (per piece)

King split mattress: 96.50 cm X 203.20 cm (per piece)

Factors to consider for mattress size
Body size

A King size mattress is best suited for an adult couple looking for extra bed space due to body size, or if one of the sleepers is more than 6 feet in height.

Family Size

King size mattress is best considered to be fit for families where more than two people want to sleep on a single bed on a regular basis. King size mattress is also comfortable for adult couples with young kid or pet.

Some of the young couple who are planning to start or extend family with kids also prefer to invest in a king size mattress.

Room size

Architects and designers recommend considering room size as an important factor in deciding the mattress size. The golden rule of thumb is a ratio of 3:1 which means that your room should be 3 times the size of the mattress area. A standard King mattress takes 43 square feet of space. So, if the size of the room is 125 square feet or more, the King size mattress should be a good size.

Many older single-story homes were not designed to fit a King size mattress in any room, so SpineSoft advise our customers to measure their room and make sure a King mattress will fit in your bedroom.

House Size

The space available in the house to move the mattress around or from outside of house to the inside destination room/area should be a major consideration when deciding on a king size mattress.

Often the King mattress will flex and fit, however, we have experienced that our clients face tough time in maneuverings a single piece king size within the home especially when moving up or down the stairs.

SpineSoft also suggests that price should not be considered as a major factor in deciding the size of a mattress. The difference in price is not much between the King mattress and other available mattress size.
