What mattress size should I buy – Queen or King or Other

Mattress have traditionally been sold in 4 different sizes and that remains same with the modern online bed in a bag way of selling the mattress. Although we have seen some different variants of the mattress size being more commonly available in the market now, which we will be describing in the article below.

Like with most of the other products, there is no single size for mattress and bed which is fit for all. All people bear different body characteristics and that is why we have mattresses which fits the need of different person. In general, irrespective of the size of mattress you buy, the quality standards are consistent across a manufacturer’s product line.

Four traditional sizes of mattresses are as follows:

  1. King

          Dimensions: 76" (W) x 80" (L) x 12" (H)

  • King Size mattress are 16” wider but same length at queen size mattress.
  • Perfect for couples with small kids or pets.
  • Offers ample personal sleeping space for both partners. 
  1. Queen

          Dimensions: 60" (W) x 80" (L) x 12" (H) 

  • Queen size mattress is the most popular and preferred size in the industry.
  • Queen size is 6” wider and 5” lengthier than the double size.
  • Comfortably fits two people and can accommodate a small kid or pet.
  • Can fit in almost every bedroom in the house. 
  1. Double / Full 

          Dimensions: 54" (W) x 75" (L) x 12" (H) 

  • Double size mattress is the perfect size for growing kids’ bedroom.
  • Double size mattress is 16” wider but same length at twin size mattress.
  • Preferred for an adult teenager who likes ample sleeping space or for couple of young kids.
  • Commonly bought for guest rooms or smaller apartment rooms.
  1. Twin 

          Dimensions: 38" (W) x 75" (L) x 12" (H) 

  • Twin size is the smallest of all mattresses but still good enough for any single adult.
  • Twin size offers the same length as Double size mattress but is shorter in width.
  • Very easy to move around or stack during the daytime to get more space in the room.
  • Preferred for single kids of any age and is the most common size for student’s dorm.

Other than these four traditional sizes, there are three other not so common but available sizes in the market. These 3 sizes are as follow:

  1. California King

          Dimensions: 72" (W) x 84" (L) x 12" (H)

  • These mattresses are about 4’ shorter in width and 4” longer in length as compared to a standard king mattress.
  • Typically bought by people who are taller in length as this gives an extra 4” as compared to a standard king mattress.
  • Offers ample personal sleeping space for both partners.
  • Not easy to find bedsheets and other accessories. 
  1. Twin XL 

          Dimensions: 38" (W) x 80" (L) x 12" (H) 

  • These mattresses are same in width as a standard twin mattress but is 5” more in the length.
  • These are exactly the half size of a standard king mattress. That’s why most common usage of these mattresses is on a king bed.
  • Buying two Twin XL mattress vs. a single king mattress allows the consumers to manage and move the mattresses easily, however, the cost becomes more.
  • As twin size is usually preferred for single young person, so Twin XL provides more space for teens who have near or more than 6’ height. 
  1. Custom Size 

                 Dimensions: Custom – can be any size 

  • These mattresses are always made on special order and hence are more expensive than any other similar size mattress.
  • One of the most common usages is to have some seating or sleeping space on the floor in a living room.
  • Customers have custom size bed need to have custom size mattress as standard mattress won’t fit custom size bed.
  • As these mattresses are made on special order, so customer has many options to select the kind of raw material they need.
All in all, mattress sizes have not changed much in last multiple years, although, new sizes have come into market based on consumer needs. The bed in a bag packing for all size of mattress is still the same. The shipping cost of different size mattress varies as the weight of the mattress is different between different sizes of the mattress. If you are not changing your bed frame, then you will need to go with the size of your bed, however, if you are also planning to change or buy a new bed frame, then you should take time to think about what size best fits your current and future needs.
