Foam vs. Spring vs. Hybrid Mattress – Which is right?

Before the 90’s, the spring mattress was the only type that was available and manufactured. When memory foam mattresses made an entrance, people now had to decide between two types. The hybrid mattress was the latest invention in the world of mattresses and made an entrance in 2008. These three types of mattresses are commonly available throughout the world and people should consider various factors when deciding which one to choose, as they all come with benefits and drawbacks.

For starters, the traditional spring mattress is made of steel or metal coils and surrounded by layers of comfortable materials that provide foundational support and comfort. It has a short break-in period, good temperature control and offers a bouncier feel compared to other types of mattresses. However, one potential drawback of spring mattresses can be that the body does not apply an even amount of pressure across the mattress. Thus, the areas of the body which press down the hardest of the bed (usually the chest, hips and head) will get the most pushback.

On the other hand, memory foam mattresses are made of multiple layers of foam with different densities and rely on air trapped within aerated substances to offer support and bounce. Unlike spring mattress, they do tend to distribute your weight equally by supporting all pressure points similarly and thus, provide natural spinal alignment and enhanced lumbar support. These mattresses also tend to keep their shape for long amount of time. However, memory foam mattresses that are not infused with gel may retain heat, which might be uncomfortable for some.

Hybrid mattresses offer the best of both worlds, in which the “core” is typically made of pocketed innersprings and the top layer is some type of comfort foam. These mattresses combine the benefits of spring and memory foam mattresses by having an ideal bouncy feeling, balanced feel of comfort and optimal temperature regulation.

Ultimately, all three types of mattresses have their benefits and drawbacks. It is vital to do your research and pick the mattress that best caters to your sleeping preferences and needs.
